Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 16, 2026
Summary
Vimpo runs on your Mac. It has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting and no ads. The developer does not run any servers that receive your videos, subtitles, transcripts or files.
Where your data is stored
Your library, downloaded videos, subtitles and settings are stored on your Mac. Deleting the app and its files removes them.
Downloading videos
- When you paste a link, Vimpo uses the open-source tool yt-dlp to fetch the video directly from that site (for example YouTube or Bilibili).
- The request goes from your Mac to that site. That site's own privacy policy applies.
- Video thumbnails may be loaded from that site (for example i.ytimg.com).
Transcription
Transcription runs locally on your Mac with Whisper models. Audio never leaves your Mac for transcription. The model files are downloaded once from Hugging Face (huggingface.co) or its mirror hf-mirror.com.
Subtitle translation (optional)
- You can pick an AI provider (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or DeepSeek) and enter your own API key, or use a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.
- When you use a cloud provider, subtitle text is sent directly from your Mac to that provider, under your own account. That provider's terms and privacy policy apply.
- Your API key is stored in the macOS Keychain on your Mac and is only sent to the provider you chose.
Helper tools
On first run, Vimpo may download yt-dlp from GitHub and ffmpeg from martin-riedl.de.
Updates
The direct-download build checks for updates with Sparkle at updates.vimpo.app. The request includes the app version. As with any web request, the server can see your IP address.
Website
vimpo.app has no analytics and sets no cookies.
Children
Vimpo does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
